Climate in Peru (when to go?)
The coastal area (Costa) has average temperatures and it almost never rains. The Andes region (Sierra) is high in altitude and has a mountain climate: warm in the sun, cold in the shade and rainy from December to February. You feel the heat if you are directly in the sun but it is recommended to wear many layers of warm and light clothing to allow you to shed them one by one as the weather changes. Nights are very cold. Amazonia is tropical, always warm and humid.
THE COAST
There are two well-defined seasons: summer (December to March) where temperatures reach 27°C and winter (May to October), humid and cold with temperatures dipping to 12°C. Although it rarely rains on the Peruvian coast, during winter, fog and fine drizzle or garúas are common. The north coast enjoys sun all year long with temperatures reaching 35°C.
THE HIGHLANDS (SIERRA)
Dry and tropical climate, there are two well-defined seasons: summer (May to October) with sunny days, cold nights and little rain – a wonderful time to visit – and the rainy season (December to March). In the Sierra, drops in temperature during the day are common, ranging between 20°C and -2°C.
THE JUNGLE (SELVA)
Tropical and humid climate, there are two well-defined seasons: summer (from May to October) with sunny days and temperatures over 30°C, and the rainy season (from November to March) with frequent rain showers and a rise in river water levels.
